Chicago 2025 - Started out with a 3:30 goal, which would be a 10min PR (and what, at the time, would be a BQ). That spring, Boston lowered its time standards to 3:25 and revealed the year‘s ~5min buffer. I thought there’d be no way I’d run 3:25 let alone a 3:20… the original goal was a stretch itself! Long story short, I fought until the end and crossed the finish line on empty, with the clock at 3:19:47 - a 20+ min PR, BQ, and Chicago ‘26 qualifier!

Running Role Model:

Not a runner but Jessie Diggins, a Team USA Cross Country Skier. Her story is incredibly inspiring to me, and I relate to her sense of feeling like an average person athletically but willing to dig deep and dwell in the pain cave for lengths of time. I often find myself drawing motivation from her when having a tough day, physically or mentally.

Fun Facts:

  • I’ve ridden horses my entire life & compete on the international level in show jumping.

  • Frozen yogurt is the best food group.

  • Skiing (Alpine and Nordic) is my third favorite sport behind equestrian & running.

My first marathon: The Great Ocean Road Marathon in Lorne, Australia. It was during a semester abroad in college; one that my coach begrudgingly allowed me to sacrifice a track season for. I knew I'd need something keep me fit for my senior XC season, and just mileage training sounded boring. I heard about it in a book, and signed up as soon as I could. It was 27.5 miles (yes, a bit long) of ocean views, eucalyptus trees, pastures, and a ripping headwind the whole way. It was such an amazing race, and I dont think anything will ever beat the experience.

Running Start:

I grew up playing baseball, but my older sister ran XC and Track all of high school. After she'd graduated, she put my name on the XC interest list and forced me to the first practice in August as the only freshman boy on the team. It didnt take long to fall in love with it, and I haven't stopped since.

Fun Facts:

  • I love cats.

  • I grew up in Charlotte, NC.

  • I played the cello with NFL quarterback Daniel Jones's younger sister in high school.

Throwing it all the way back to high school, my most memorable race was the 2012 NJ Meet of Champions during my senior year. Hurricane Sandy had torn through New Jersey earlier that month, disrupting training for everyone and forcing a condensed state championship schedule. We didn't know what the rest of the season would look like, but we found a way to get together and continue training.

Holmdel Park—a storied and notoriously hard course in NJ—ended up hosting both the group championships and the Meet of Champions. My teammates and I all had the race of our lives, each running a PR at the group meet to win our group championship. Just four days later, our top five ran PRs again, which led to a second place finish overall as a team, the number one public school, and delivered the highest finish in our school’s history.

On top of that, I became the first runner from our school to break 16 minutes on that course—something I’d been chasing since I was a freshman. I was so proud of everyone on that team and it was the perfect conclusion to four years of cross country together.

Running Start:

When I was around 9 or 10, my parents entered my brother and me in a neighborhood 5k put on by a local hospital. My little brother and I ran it together and he leaned at the line to beat me. The race was so fun and I wanted to a second chance to beat my brother, so running kinda took off from there. I just kept jumping in neighborhood 5ks until I got to middle school and could start competing on the cross country and track team.

Fun Facts:

  • I ran steeplechase for a bit in college and my first ever race of it was in the snow - I still get chills thinking about that water pit.

  • My first ever concert was going to see the American Idol on the Road tour with my mom in high school.

  • I've kept every card (birthday, holiday, thank you, etc.) I've ever received.

Long-Term Running Goals:

To continue finding deep satisfaction in running and the training process so that I never have to stop.

Running Start:

After running in high school I didn't lace up again for 34 years. During that time I battled chronic leukemia which I finally got into remission. After reading a Lauren Fleshman article about 5K running, I did a couch-to-5K program. I ran the Flying Turkey that fall in 22:22 and then I ran all winter through ice and cold and realized how much I loved running, more than I ever did in high school. In no time I shaved three minutes off my time, won a park run ... and I was hooked!

Fun Facts:

  • My hometown is Billings, Montana.

  • I make soup for my co-working space every Wednesday.

  • I have four wonderful grandchildren in their teens and 20s.

Continue to chase PRs across distances and run in the elite field of a major marathon one day!

I grew up obsessed with soccer and played soccer through college. I was fortunate enough to be allowed to walk onto the track team in the winter of my senior year (despite having never run a competitive race and no times to show), and I have never looked back. I always thought that I would never love anything as much as soccer, but I could not have been more wrong!

Fun Facts:

  • I'm entitled to citizenship in four countries.

Running Start:

I started running XC in high school when I couldn't cut it as a varsity soccer player and to get in shape for softball. I'd seen my older brother run XC and track, so I knew it was a sport that rewarded work ethic, even if you were on the smaller side.

I continued running XC at Denison University, a DIII college in Ohio. My coach persuaded me to join the track team in the spring. Running year-round for the first time made a big difference and I went from a middle-of-the-pack runner to an All American. In 2009 I won the North Coast Athletic Conference Championship and the Great Lakes Regional Championship, and placed sixth at the NCAA Division III Cross Country Nationals. On the track, I set the school records for the 5k (17:05) and the 10k (35:16).

Now, as a parent of 2, I am following in my dad's footsteps and trying to juggle life with early morning runs and marathon training.

Running Role Model:

My dad. He may not be an elite runner, but he had the strongest work ethic. A lawyer and a dad of 4, he made time to marathon train and often brought me along for runs. We would wake up at 5 am to run before school/work. And we always finished runs sprinting up an awful hill we dubbed "St Moritz." He researched workouts and brought me to the track with a stop watch to try them out together. I'll never forget a particularly difficult ladder workout called the "Michigan."

Fun Facts:

  • I was an NCAA Woman of the Year finalist in 2011.

  • I had a pre-kids career at NBC Sports (meeting Olympic athletes was an inspiration) and the Chicago Wolves managing corporate sponsorships.

  • I'm a gardening aficionado, and in 2022 our garden was selected to be on the Arlington Heights Garden Walk.

When I'm 60, my son will be 25, my daughter turning 21. Chicago 2042: Here we come.

Running Start:

I started smoking when I was 15 and by the time I got to college I was addicted to two packs a day. I'd had a blast, but by the end of my 20s, I was exhausted. I've had high blood pressure my whole life -- it runs in my family along with heart disease and stroke. Rail thin growing up, my weight was suddenly ballooning. And, more than anything, I just felt like I didn't have control over anything anymore. I had to make a change, so after a long New Years Eve out at Jake's Pub, I woke up and decided to quit smoking. After many failed attempts and excuses, it stuck. But I had an itch to replace it with something.

My wife had started working out with regularity at XSport and was encouraging me to join her. My first real memory of her is just after we'd met in college. I was high on acid convinced I was being stalked by a squirrel and bumped into her while she was on a late fall jog. That's really my first running memory, come to think of it. Anyway, a few months before I quit smoking, I'd put on my jeans, did a few minutes on the elliptical with her, and vowed to never exercise again. But the New Years of it all had me commit to try new things. Take some chances because whatever I'd been doing wasn't working. I got a watch and an app and started jogging around the block. Goals ticked off like flicks of ash. How long could I run for? Could I make the watch say 8:00? Could I run 5 miles in 40:00 (even today I get a such a pure satisfaction over 5 in 40). What was this marathon thing I saw on Twitter...? I was hooked.

Fun Facts:

  • I can't drive.

  • I can't swim.

  • And, you guessed it, I can't dance.

2024 Last Chance BQ.2:

Running a sub-3:00 marathon (2:58:10), all self-trained, was my most memorable race. It was a 43-minute PR and the result of 2+ years of steady training. The training block and race opened my eyes to the power of how consistency compounds (in life and running).

Running Start:

Chicago Marathon 2019:

I started running thanks to a mix of bad timing and good peer pressure. One of my best friends convinced me to run the 2019 Chicago Marathon with him, but in August of that year (read: 2 months before race day).

Slight problem: I’d never run a real race before and had only a couple of miles under my belt. We were investment banking analysts, convincing ourselves that one weekend “long-ish” run was enough. This would be easy for a couple of former college football players, right? (very wrong.)

With one 16-mile “long run” (was sore for a week) and a lot of ignorance, we gave it a go. Without official entries, given our timely sign-up, we had to buy bibs off Craigslist (sorry, Dan and Julie 😊).

The goal was simple: just finish. We crossed the line a little over five hours later, humbled and hooked.

Fun Facts:

  • My parents forced me to do Middle School Track & Field. I hated running, so I opted for the shot put.

  • I played college football at a small division III school.

  • My marathon debut time was over 5 hours (Chicago 2019).

A friend convinced me to run the Detroit Marathon as a relay by promising me my leg would only be 3 miles. I worked at it for 2 months to build up the endurance to run the 3 and found out the night before the race that my leg was actually over 6 miles long! Turns out it didn't matter, once I got going and felt the energy of the race I was hooked. The next time I ran a marathon it was for the whole 26.2 (and we are still friends).

Running Role Model:

Des Linden. I mean, I almost can't even explain why! She's an incredible runner (obviously) she's gritty and tough but she's relatable and inspires me to put in the work to see what I'm capable of.

BOA Chicago Marathon 2019. I had missed BQ by less than a minute (for the third time in 2 years) just three weeks prior at BQ2 in Geneva. I planned on running the race as a recovery run, have fun, forego the pressure, and take on CIM in December. "Fun" (+ great weather and amazing crowds) got me to a BQ and PR by ~6 minutes, with a perfectly even split. When I'm digging for motivation, I reflect on how genuinely happy I was to check the BQ goal off my list, and look towards accomplishing the next one.

I didn't make the poms or dance teams when a bunch of other friends did, going into high school freshman year. I was feeling untethered and needed something to do afterschool, my dad suggested cross country. Thought, no way I could do that - but still had time to join summer practices, so did my best and eventually didn't need as many walk breaks. The girls were SO sweet and silly. I was lucky to find myself in an incredible running program, bought in, and had a ton of fun competing with some now lifelong besties. Probably one of the best decisions of my life!

Running Role Model:

NIKKI HILTZ WOO!! They are ridiculously fast, strong, and resilient - and I rally with them for their advocacy work with the queer community. Exciting to see that on the biggest stage of our sport.

I was in a 1500m prelim with them during their last year in college, sitting next to them after the race (lol I did not advance from the round) I said "wow, that was so hard", they were like "yeah I've raced like hundreds of 1500s I feel like and it is always something" - facts.

Fun Facts:

  • I <3 braiding hair, I had a braid-stagram called o_braidn.

Anchorage Marathon 2017 - between the bear warnings, chasing a deer at mile 15, winning my age group and BQ'ing (okay small race but still counts!), and kicking off an epic weeklong hiking trip with Chrissy (now wife and DW teammate), it was a keeper. To think we only signed up because it was just $10 more than the half!

Running Start:

I ran XC and track in high-school back home in Buffalo (GO BILLS). I wasn't the fastest or most talented, but running early taught me invaluable life lessons around commitment, embracing discomfort, and teamwork. I still hear some of my coaches' voices whenever I work out ("cutting corners makes you lose your edge!"). It'd take a few more years after college before I'd rediscover joy in running, but it's been a true gift.

Fun Facts:

  • My earliest memory is vomiting at my 5th birthday party during "Happy Birthday".

  • The English muffin is a marathon carb-load staple that otherwise has no place in my diet.

I ran my first marathon a few months later – in San Francisco, my hometown. Hooked ever since!
