The Chicago Marathon 2018 - it was such a great day for me despite being rainy - it’s the race where I nabbed my marathon PR and really proved to me that I can be competitive in this chapter in my life and don’t have to give up on PRs after having kids!

Fun Facts:

  • I have 4 kids ages 6-2 (soon to be 6-13, lord help us) so my life is a cluster of kid activity scheduling nightmares

  • I ran XC and track at the University of Michigan 💛💙

  • I’m on the Tailwind Core Team and am obsessed!

Morning or Afternoon?:

Afternoon but I also really enjoy a summer evening run - just wash all the bugs off ASAP after

Solo or With Friends?:

I like a good solo effort to sort out my thoughts and just be alone (there is not a lot of solitude in a house with 4 kids!) but I love chatting with friends for a fun long run

Summer or Winter?:

Summer but no one likes extremes! I hate running in a ton of layers though.

My most memorable race is running Indy in 2017 after blowing up a few weeks earlier at the Chicago Marathon. In the weeks in between, I was introduced to Damon King and we decided to work together in the race. This was a huge PR and the way I was introduced to DWRunning. The rest is history!

Fun Facts:

  • I’ve worn the Olympic Gold medal for the men’s 1500.

  • I only read non-fiction books and my wife says that’s boring.

Chicago Marathon 2019 - The perfect cool weather and so much crowd energy that I negative split the race and PR'ed my half marathon in the second half. The unicorn of marathon performances!

Running Start:

I've run casually all of my adult life, but really started training hard and improving after my second child was born 7 years ago. It gives me goals that are all my own to work for; juggling the demands somehow gives me purpose and makes me more effective at my career (and a better mom to my family).

Fun Facts:

  • I travel a lot for work, and my favorite way to explore a new place is to run through new neighborhoods; so I've done running tours of most major cities in the US (and some international).

  • I'm an architect working in hospitality so my home has become a bit of a lab to try out new ideas and I love to change and evolve the design - drives my family crazy!

  • On my 40th birthday my husband and I ran the "Highest Road Half Marathon on Planet Earth" in the mountains in Montana at 9,250 feet above sea level and we both won the master's age brackets.

Track or Trails?:

Road! I love to look at urban landscape and homes along my route.

Solo or With Friends?:

Most Memorable Run:

A long tempo at WFG during my first year with DWR. Coach gave me a pace I really wasn't sure I could keep and put me in a faster group than I had run with before. Right before we started, and without me voicing my uncertainty, he simply told me I could do it. I kept that in mind for the whole run and had by far the best tempo of my life to that date. Since then I've always run with that group and continued to do things I once thought impossible.

Most Memorable Race:

I took many years off of focused training and racing for family and work. When I returned to running, I had no intentions of marathoning. Yet someone "planted the seed". Leading up to the 2018 Houston marathon, everything just "clicked". My body felt good, I had good feelings about the race, and the course, the people, and the motivation was huge. I qualified for my first Boston and had a 20 minute PR almost 14 years after my last marathon.

Running Role Model:

My Dad will always be my role model who was my first and biggest fan. A runner himself, with my encouragement, he returned to running when I was a young adult. He fell in love with trail marathons and qualified for Boston multiple times but never actually registered to run it. His love for running was pure joy and I will always treasure the runs we shared together.

Fun Facts:

  • My senior year of high school my XC team won the state meet and subsequently my senior year of college my XC team won nationals. Fun memories!

  • I've now completed my first Boston marathon and it was an incredible experience!

  • While I enjoy lots of musical genres, I don't know why it often surprises people that I love hard rock music!

Long-Term Running Goals:

Longer term, I want to run a 2:50 marathon and I want to get into ultra-running. A big goal of mine is also to eventually run the Speed Project race with a team and run in more countries, as well as complete all 6 majors (still need New York, Tokyo, London, and Berlin).

Most Memorable Race:

So far, it's my 2:55 PR at Indy Marathon in 2018 and Boston Marathon in 2018. Indy was by far my best run race mentally and physically. I ran a 1:29 and came back in a 1:26. Everything added up and I got out of my head and let training do the work. Breaking 3 hours and doing it by 5 mins at the same time was overwhelming in the best of ways.

Boston 2018 has to be here too - it was POURING, WINDY, and just an overall whirlwind of a race. I ran a 3:00:30 marathon even though the odds were completely stacked against me weather wise. I have endless stories from this race - it will go down in history and anyone that runs it gets it.

I am still just so proud of myself for both of these races and I don't say this often about myself.

Fun Facts:

  • I am a beer and coffee enthusiast!

  • I used to do BMX until I was 17 years old.

  • I got hit in the face by a foul ball that Gordon Beckham hit in the bottom of the 7th inning at a White Sox game in 2014 and it broke my nose, gave me 2 black eyes, and gave me a concussion. I still have the ball!

The 2011 Boston Marathon - the one and only perfect weather day at Boston (50 degrees with a tailwind) was my second marathon and I ran an 8 minute PR. The intense energy of the crowds and how invincible I felt is something I'll never forget.

2019 Chicago Marathon. My wife gave birth to our first kid 2 weeks before the race, so my taper was limited and sleep was in (very) short supply. On top of that, I had 3 Ubers and 1 Lyft flake on me and cancel, but the CTA came to the rescue and I made it to the start on time. Once I started running, everything just clicked. Dan gave me a very simple race plan (bide your time for 13 miles, start to move up for 5 miles, turn the screws for the last 8) and everything just fell into place. I finished under 3:00 for the first time and with a 6+ minute PR. When I got home my 2-week-old congratulated me by pooping into my hand.

Running Role Model:

Ben True. He won my very first cross country skiing race, while I lost. Ever since then I've aspired to be like Ben. Now he holds American Records and, well, here I am.

Long-Term Running Goals:

I'd love to run a marathon one day but I'm injury prone so my main focus is long-term health and fitness.

Running Start:

I did not grow up a runner. I started running while working my first job after college as a way to stay in shape and de-stress from the day while I was living in Oklahoma. I had friends who also ran so it became a thing we all did (separately of course because we were all in different places). While I didn't love the act of running nor was I naturally talented, I loved the way it made me feel and the improvements I could see when I kept getting out there.

Fun Facts:

  • My favorite travel activity is running - I love getting to know a new place on foot.

  • I'm known at work for convincing my coworkers to run races.

Secured a PR, 10th consecutive Chicago Marathon raced and 10th consecutive Chicago Marathon PR, finished Top 10 in AG, 3rd fastest U.S.A. runner in my AG and negative split the race!!! I’ve never managed a race better in my life and it felt fantastic crossing that finish line knowing I am capable of achieving great things!

And although 2019 Chicago Marathon was epic, 2021 Boston was its own highlight reel! Going in with no expectations other than running a sub-3 hr race with Dave Walters and Matt Flaherty, as it was my 3rd marathon in 6 weeks, I had one of the funnest races I’ve ever had.
