Long-Term Running Goals:
To qualify for the Olympic Trials, to make an Olympic Team, and to ultimately never know a day that I don’t absolutely love this sport.
Hands down it is my marathon PR at the Philadelphia Marathon. The weather for the race was 50 degrees with 20–25mph winds with gusts up to 40mph, and from the start I knew this race would define what kind of strength I had. Entering Philly, I had this image in my mind of a flat course, a calm day, and a perfect execution of a race plan. I was confident in what I could do on that “dream day.” But when do we ever get perfect race conditions? Instead of calm and confident, what I got was unyielding head and cross winds and a battle against conditions and mental demons I’ve never experienced. By the last 5k, I worried that I was going to tumble to the ground, but I saw 2:54:xx on my watch and knew I needed to GO. To finish with a 1 min PR, 2:55:54, and 10th OA Female, was honestly unbelievable. It’s funny how racing works - races we are most proud of are sometimes not the ones that are the best times or how we planned them.
Best Running Story:
When I was traveling up to Grandma's Marathon in 2017, I had a layover and an incredibly long flight delay that put me on edge. After calling my mom freaking out, and I looked up and saw that Kara and Adam Goucher were on that same flight #totalfangirlmoment! I ended up sitting next to Adam, and had the most calming conversation with him. When we landed in Duluth, I specifically remember Kara telling to keep dreaming, and to keep running towards my goal of the Olympic Trials. I ended up having my breakthrough marathon in Duluth that year, and I owe part of that breakthrough to the Gouchers!
