Favorite Run Location:
There's an island on the Danube River in Budapest... Merriam Island I think is the name. They have a 5300m mondo track that circles it. It winds in and out of a really pretty forest. 5300m!! We discovered it on a trip there last fall. I ran 3 laps. That run still feels like a dream. It was even foggy that day. Coolest run ever. I'm so glad I know that exists somewhere in the world and that I've run on it.
Most Memorable Run:
November 21, 2008 I went on a shake-out run the day before a marathon with some friends and friends of those friends. One of which was the guy who won the marathon the next day. The next year that guy won again, and I was 2nd. That guy proposed to me on the XC field where we had started that shake-out run the year before.
Motivation When Hurting During a Race or Workout:
In races my biggest talent is being really strong during the dark patches. Maybe I'm just prepared for the hurt. During training I remind myself that race day will be SO MUCH harder. It's my homework. Something I repeat during workouts or day after day of training when I'm tired is that I am "calloused to effort." I got it from a good friend of mine who once wrote in his blog "Training is doing your homework. It's not exciting. More often than not, it's tedious. There is certainly no glory in it. But you stick with it, over time, and incrementally through no specific session, your body changes. Your mind becomes calloused to effort. You stop thinking of running as difficult or interesting or magical. It just becomes what you do. It becomes a habit." It's out of context so people usually say "but there IS glory in it!" ;)
Favorite Part of Being a DWRunner:
Well I've only been on the team for 2 weeks (officially), but I LOVE the enthusiasm. It makes me so excited to train and work hard. I feel like I can do great things on the DWRunning team.
