It's funny, the race that probably means the most to me is one I never finished. My senior year of high school, I broke my tibia in a sort of freak incident with 150m to go in our conference championship 3200m. The break ended up being pretty bad and I spent the next 3 months in a cast, but beyond the recovery process, it is the memory of the race itself that makes me proud to think back on. I went into the last turn that day in second, a couple strides back from the lead, and yet for the first time I can remember, absolutely certain that I would catch and pass the runner in front. I didn't - a few steps later I was collapsing on the infield - but I try to think about that moment, that complete belief, when the racing gets tough.
I secretly have always wanted to be a trail ultra runner! I'm likely not coordinated enough, and would totally have to re-learn proper downhill running form, but I miss the trails terribly while forced to do so many miles on the lakefront path.
Favorite Run Location:
The dirt roads and trails around my parent's house in Vermont. For whatever reason, those roads have quite often been where I've started jogging coming back from injuries over the years.
Reward for a good race:
Depends what I feel like - though often that ends up being a beer!
Mountains or Ocean?:
Tea or Coffee?:
Early Bird or Night Owl?:
Chocolate or Vanilla?:
