Motivation to Run:
The health benefits and stress relief, but mostly, to challenge myself and explore my limits.
The 2014 Boston Marathon. Following the events the previous year, the atmosphere was electric. The crowds were huge and energizing. Didn't hurt that I PR'd either.
Most Memorable Race:
The Berlin Marathon was quite an experience. Got into Germany a couple days before the race and tried to adjust to the time difference. Struggled to find a good lunch option the day before the race and ended up having a rough allergic reaction to a random tofu sandwich I grabbed at the expo. Gritted through the pain/nausea to search the city for my usual pre-race breakfast, but to no avail. Certainly not my best pre-race setup, but thankfully race day went much better. Beautiful weather for a marathon and a great course. I was a bit confused as to why sports drink was every 5mi, but sparkling water and sweet tea were available every mile.. And my km to mileage conversion skills were tested late in the race thanks to the km only markers.. though the realization that I was actually at mile 22 instead of 21 was one of my best marathon moments. The Brandenburg Gate could not have been a more welcome sight at mile 26. Ended up with a PR after a 3.5 year drought. Met ups with some Minnesotans that we randomly met the previous day and celebrated with some delicious German food and beer. A really good day.
Motivation When Hurting During a Race or Workout:
Pride and stubbornness. The exact mixture of the two depends on the race.
